Work/Shop

February – March 2020,   Malmö / Helsingør
In collaboration with Catch & Cabas
Fellow designers: Verónica Giraldo, Valeria Iezzi, Alexander König & Love Lagerkvist

Work/shop is a collaboration between Catch, the center for art, design and technology, and Cabas, an organization that creates jobs for adults with physical and mental disabilities. Using co-design methods, we developed two technology-integrated products to produce and sell at the Work/Shop in Helsingør.

Design Brief

The goal of this project was to develop new product concepts that combine Cabas’ craftmanship expertise with accessible technologies. These products were aimed to be sold at the Work/Shop in Helsingør.

Getting to know each other

For this project, it was very important to get an understanding of the context that we were designing for and the people we were designing with. Therefore, we visited the workshop of Cabas and the exhibition space of Catch. We got inspired by seeing the products that the employees at Cabas were making already.

Co-design workshop

After getting to know each other, a co-design workshop was organized. During this workshop, possible product ideas were discussed through materials that were brought by the manager of Cabas and product examples that were brought by us. These were used to start a more in-depth conversation about different types of products that could be made.

Ideation &
material exploration

Using the ideas from the co-design workshop, we continued ideating. Next to that, we explored several technologies such as light-up jewelry and stick-on LEDs that could be used for the products.

Co-evaluation

From the ideation session, five product directions were developed. These were discussed with the people from Catch and Cabas to decide which two product directions should be further developed.

Final designs

It was decided to focus on developing light-up postcards and a light-up mobile. From each product, a high-fidelity prototype was made.

Toolbox

Even though this project was over, this was only the start of the collaboration between Catch and Cabas. Therefore, a toolbox was made that can be used for future product development. This toolbox includes the creative collaboration methods that we used, process descriptions of the final designs and a catalogue of electronics.
