In a period of 2 weeks, this pressure cooker-style project was conducted to develop a design solution to support emergency care providers in capturing and analyzing qualitative data on the wellbeing of the patient. The Memento ecosystem was developed, which consists of a recording device and a digital data overview.

Design Brief

Philips Experience Design asked to develop a solution for inthemoment data capturing and reporting for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers. Since their full attention is needed to take care of the patient, reporting is often done afterwards. However, this way the information is less accurate and cannot be used in the moment of care. Therefore, a solution needs to be found to support reporting throughout the process.

Design Process

Philips’ Cocreate process was used for this project to first discover the design context, then frame the project focus, followed by an ideation on possible solutions and is finished by building the user story.

Reporting journey

Discover

First, the design context was explored by familiarizing ourselves with the current ways of data collection and reporting, as well as by creating a customer journey of the EMS provider’s reporting process.

Frame

The design challenge was further narrowed down to focus on supporting EMS providers in capturing the qualitative data that they cannot measure with existing devices, such as how the patient looks and behaves.

How can we support EMS providers in
well-documenting qualitative data
during their
time caring for the patient, to
support immediate communication
to hospital personnel and easier
reporting after the shift?

Ideate

During the ideation phase, a brainstorm was held on possible solutions. After that, one design concept was selected that fit the requirements best. The first requirement was that the reporting should be executed fast and easily and in the periphery of attention. Additionally, the reporting should not be fully standardized, but also allow for own input. The documentation should be automized as much as possible, but also allow for changes and additions. Lastly, the solution should be well integrated in the current environment and consider everyone’s privacy.

Build

A user story was created to illustrate how the design concept would be executed in a real-life scenario. This story was used to communicate the design concept to the stakeholders.

The illustrations were created by Katie Verschueren and the visual of the data overview by Wisse Raaijmakers.

Reflecting

It was concluded that the Momentum ecosystem supports EMS providers in fast & easy data documentation and clear & effective reporting. Through this solution, EMS providers can accurately report information in-the-moment, while keeping their attention to the patient. Several recommendations for future work have been formulated, such as iterating on the recording interactions and further co-designing this system in collaboration with medical professionals.
