In collaboration with Philips Avent

Baby AwareCare is a wall-mounted device that is designed for the home environment of parents of a child aged below 6 months old. It gives an overview of data about the food intake of the child in a non-obtrusive way.  This way, parents are supported with making well-informed decisions. To gather the data used for this device, Baby AwareCare can be connected to several smart baby monitoring products, like the Philips Avent Smart baby bottle, the Baby+ app and daycare apps.

Design Process

Design Brief

The goal of this project was to design for working first-time parents of a child aged below 12 months old that is going to the day care for multiple days in the week. This context was provided by Philips Avent.

Market
Analysis

To get a better understanding of the current situation, research was done into the smart baby monitoring products that are currently available and the way the data from these devices is communicated to its user. The design opportunity was found to design a new way of communicating the data, other than using apps.

Customer Journey

After interviewing several working first-time parents, a customer journey was made to visualize the current process of taking care of a child. Next to that, two pain points were defined.

Ideation

Two ideation iterations were conducted, using techniques such as mindmapping and sketching. In this process, design requirements were made and used to reflect on ideas.

Conceptualization

After selecting the final design concept, the details, such as the different possibilities for interaction, were developed. A render and a low-fidelity prototype were made to test the look and feel of the design and the proportions.

Realization

An experience prototype was made using the lasercutter and Arduino. The prototype was programmed to show the changes of the device during the day and was used for demonstration purposes.

Validation

The final prototype was used to validate the design with potential users. Next to that, it was used for an exhibition during which expert feedback was received.
